As part of its quest to rake in record profits, UnitedHealthcare continues to reduce the number of physicians in its network by terminating agreements with trusted healthcare providers. Among the latest victims: American Anesthesiology of Florida and American Anesthesiology Services of Florida, quality providers of anesthesia care at hospitals and healthcare facilities across Florida.

UnitedHealthcare terminated the agreements in December 2023 and these anesthesiologists remain out of network

UnitedHealthcare’s aggressive actions toward physician groups is part of a disturbing national trend. As a result of the federal No Surprises Act legislation, which was intended to bring insurers and providers together, many insurers are using the legislation as a weapon to kick quality providers out of network, even when it disrupts the healthcare system and makes it harder for patients to access in-network care.

This move comes at a time when Florida is already facing a severe shortage of anesthesiologists. There are currently more than 1,000 unfilled openings for anesthesiologists and certified nurse anesthetists in Florida. A Feb. 20, 2024 article warns that “hospitals across the United States are struggling to maintain fully staffed anesthesia departments, which is critical to keeping their operating rooms and procedure rooms open and productive.”

American Anesthesiology of Florida and American Anesthesiology Services of Florida take pride in being in network providers. The practices are currently in network with all other major insurers in Florida.
